From Corporate Job to Bookkeeping Business: TFB Spotlight on Roderick Robeson

tfb-star-spotlightIf you're a professional bookkeeper or accountant who has been thinking about starting your bookkeeping business for a long time, but have been hesitating to make the leap, this TFB Spotlight is for you!

Roderick Robeson, who is a CPA, had a very typical beginning working in corporate America for years. He had an entrepreneurial dad, but it took a long time for him to realize that starting his own accounting and bookkeeping firm was the right fit for him. It was a gradual realization.

In this interview you'll hear what it was that made him finally make the (scary) move from the security of a regular paycheck to being his own boss and quickly growing a very successful bookkeeping and tax practice. HINT: He started his business only a couple years ago and already has nearly 100 clients, is making six figures and did very little marketing.

Learn his secrets in this real-world interview from someone who is very deliberately taking action and reaping the rewards of building a true business.

The takeaway was to get started no matter how imperfect and not get bogged down in the planning stage. I do believe however that if I am to target my market and types of services I’d like to provide, that would require some marketing initially. I think word of mouth advertising in a particular niche would come after targeting and subsequently doing an exceptional job. Another takeaway was providing superior service. From a retail sales background, I know that I could excel in this area so making that a selling point is a great and achievable idea. I would like to start virtually, but I have no interest in growing too large. That is just my personal preference.

Excellent points, Gail! I so agree that one of Roderick’s key secrets is that he is a DOER, despite the bumps in the road that showed up and weren’t in the plan. I also agree with you regarding targeting a specific type of client you want to serve. That just makes your marketing efforts so much more effective. And once you have that reputation of superior service, the word starts to spread in that industry’s community.

And you are spot on that working virtually works well whether your business model is to scale and grow a large firm or you want to stay small.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts, they’re great!
